You may request that inaccurate or incomplete information about you be corrected. It prevents an organization from using or distributing incorrect information about you.
The right of rectification allows you to correct inaccurate data about yourself (wrong age or address) or to complete data (address without apartment number) in relation to the purpose of the processing.
The data controller must also inform other recipients of the data of the corrections made – for example, business partners – unless such communication would require disproportionate efforts.

This step is essential if you wish to refer the matter to the regulatory authority in the event of a refusal, unsatisfactory response or lack of response.
Are you doing this by mail? Ask for an acknowledgement of receipt that will prove the date of your request.
The agency must respond to you as soon as possible and no later than one month, which may be extended to three months depending on the complexity of the request or the number of requests the agency has received. In the latter case, the organization must inform you of the reasons for the extension within the one-month period. During this period, you may request « limitation of processing« , i.e. a « freeze » on the use of the data.
If the organization does not respond within one month of your request for rectification or does not inform you of an extension, you may file a complaint with the regulatory authority with evidence of your prior actions.
The right of rectification does not apply to literary, artistic and journalistic processing.
Concerning the rectification of data of deceased persons, the heirs can require the organization to take into account the death or to proceed to the necessary updates. Find our practical sheet on digital death.
